The Lineage
Born in the heat of Southern California’s air‑cooled scene in the early 1980s, VintageFlat4 has carried the torch of Vintage Porsche & VW performance for over four decades. What began as a small shop chasing quarter‑mile glory has matured into a workshop of ritual and precision, now housed in low‑slung barns outside historic Fort Wayne, Indiana. Every engine we build carries both the mischief of SoCal hot‑rodding, lessons learned on the German Autobahn, back country roads from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and the discipline of Midwestern craftsmanship.
The Promise
Every VintageFlat4 engine is more than a sum of parts. It is a continuation of a tradition: the ritual of blueprinting, the patience of hand‑tuning, the joy of mechanical music. This 1745 cc track engine is a piece of that lineage—crafted for competition but carrying the soul of every air‑cooled racer who came before.
VintageFlat4 Heritage Edition Handcrafted engines. Period‑correct performance. Built to be driven.
This 1745 cc Type 1 competition engine is not a catalog build. It is a hand‑fitted, blueprint‑checked, and dyno‑proven machine. The magnesium case is reinforced, gusseted, shuffle‑pinned, and cut only where necessary strength preserved, not wasted. The rotating assembly is all chromoly, balanced to racing tolerances.

The magnesium case is reinforced, gusseted, shuffle‑pinned, and cut only where necessary strength preserved, not wasted. The rotating assembly is all chromoly, balanced to racing tolerances.
The heads are not CNC‑milled. They are handcrafted, hand‑ported, and flow‑tuned by eye, ear, and feel—each chamber balanced, each port shaped for velocity and response. This is work that cannot be automated; it is learned, practiced, and passed down.
This engine is built to live
This engine is built to live at 8,000 rpm, but more importantly, it is built to feel alive.
